Faculty: Jeff Hoffman, Former CEO Enable Holdings
Jeff Hoffman is an accomplished entrepreneur and innovator in the fields of Internet, e-commerce, and media/entertainment. Having launched his first software company while still a student at Yale University, Hoffman has founded and grown a series of successful startup companies in his career, raising independent financing for his ventures and guiding his companies to both acquisitions and public offerings.
Jeff currently serves as the CEO of Enable Holdings, Inc., one the world’s leading excess inventory solutions companies. Enable Holdings operates such online sites as uBid.com and RedTag.com, and specializes in the liquidation of excess inventory from major brand name manufacturers and retailers, including Sony, HP, Dell, Toshiba, Samsung, and more. The company has sold over $2 billion worth of computers, consumer electronics, jewelry, apparel, collectibles, and other products, and is currently expanding globally. Jeff’s first startup was a software company in the travel industry named CTI, a company that quickly became the industry leader in technology for the travel and tourism industry, and was later acquired by American Express. For his achievements, Jeff was named one of the industry’s 25 Most Influential Executives. Hoffman was also a founder of early e-commerce pioneer Virtual Shopping, Inc., which developed patented, proprietary software and hardware for online retailing on the Internet, and was later acquired by Europe’s Wallenberg Group.
More recently, Jeff was a founder and CEO in the Priceline.com family of companies, where Jeff held two CEO titles and led the development and launch of Priceline’s consumer company. Hoffman also served as an executive in Walker Digital, the parent company of Priceline and one of the country’s most innovative creators of intellectual property and new business models.
After Priceline, Jeff was a founding partner as well as Chairman and CEO of Black Sky Entertainment, an independent production company in the film and music industries. Hoffman’s firm successfully produced such independent films as CABIN FEVER (a horror film made for $1.4 million that has grossed over $100 million worldwide), as well as working in the music industry, producing musical tours and concerts including such recording artists as Elton John, Boyz II Men, Britney Spears and others.
Jeff dedicates a significant portion of his time to mentoring other entrepreneurs, having served as Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the Advanced Technology Development Center at Georgia Tech, as well as being a Coach and Mentor in the Kaufman Institute’s FastTrac Entrepreneur’s program. Hoffman is also Chairman of the American Association of Adapted Sports Programs, a non-profit organization serving to bring sports and sports leagues to disabled children all across the country.

Michael L. Nikolich serves as chief marketing officer for SmithBucklin. Nikolich founded Tech Image® in 1993 and today the agency is recognized as one of the country’s top 25 technology public relations firms, according to O’Dwyer’s Public Relations Report. SmithBucklin acquired the agency in 2007 and Nikolich continued to serve as president of the agency until becoming chief marketing officer (CMO) of SmithBucklin in September 2009. As CMO, Nikolich is responsible for SmithBucklin’s internal and external communications, including advertising, branding, corporate communications, marketing, messaging, public relations and sales support.
Nikolich has worked in public relations since 1979 and was honored by iStreet Magazine as one of Chicago’s top 100 technology professionals. He was also named one of Chicago’s Internet pioneers by the Chicago Sun-Times. Under his leadership, Tech Image was named “Best Boutique PR Agency to Work for” two consecutive years by The Holmes Report. The agency also was honored as one of the country’s most influential technology public relations in an independent survey of 300 technology journalists conducted by PRSourcecode.
Nikolich has worked on the agency side his entire career, previously serving as a senior vice president at Chicago public relations firm Selz Seabolt Communications. Additional agency experience includes Grey-North Advertising, McKinney Mid-America and William Hart Adler.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and journalism from Northern Illinois University (NIU) and is a member of the NIU Alumni Board. During 2002 and 2003, he served on advisory boards for the Midwest Entrepreneurs’ Forum and Sales and Marketing Executives of Chicago and in 2005 was chairman of the Technology Practice for the WORLDCOM Public Relations Group, the leading global network of independent public relations firms.

Faculty: Dave Tolmie, former successful business owner and currently a Partner with Edgewater Funds, a private equity firm with over $1 billion in capital under management.
Dave Tolmie is a Partner with Edgewater Funds, a Chicago-based private equity firm with over $1 billion in capital under management. As one of the firm’s senior partners, Dave is active in sourcing and making new investments, raising capital and serving on the board of directors of various Edgewater portfolio companies. Edgewater acquires lower middle market companies across a range of growing industries.
Prior to joining Edgewater in 2001, Dave’s career was in leading public and private companies as CEO or senior officer. Dave was CEO and President of Yesmail, Inc., the industry’s leading provider of email direct marketing services. He led the company through its venture capital financing, IPO, and eventual sale for $720 million. Dave joined Yesmail from Platinum Venture Partners, where he was the firm’s CEO In Residence and led the venture firm’s investments in business services, interactive marketing, and e-commerce.
Previously, Dave was Senior Vice President of Operations for Bally Total Fitness, beginning his employment there in 1986 with a company subsequently acquired by Bally. At Bally, Dave was responsible for all aspects of the company’s operations, including $650 million in annual revenues and its 13,000-person sales and operations workforce. During his tenure, Bally achieved a successful IPO spin-out from its parent company and a 400+% increase in market value. Dave began his career as a Product Manager at General Mills, Inc. and then as a consultant with McKinsey & Co., where he was a member of the firm’s Consumer Marketing Practice in New York.
Dave holds a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard University, where he graduated in 1980 and received awards for leadership and outstanding contribution through his role as Student Body President. He received his BA, with honors, from the University of Virginia in 1977.
Dave is active in civic and non-profit activities, including serving on boards for the Field Museum, Illinois Venture Capital Assoc., Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center, Opportunity International, University of Virginia Jefferson Scholars and the Faraja School for Children with Physical Disabilities in Tanzania, Africa. He resides in Lake Forest, Illinois with his wife Tracy and their three children.

Marian Salzman, partner and CMO at Porter Novelli Worldwide, was named one of the top five trendspotters in the world by global publisher VNU in 2004.
Marian has served as CMO at JWT Worldwide, chief strategy officer at Euro RSCG Worldwide, president of Young & Rubicam’s Intelligence Factory and worldwide director of TBWA’s Department of the Future. Earlier in her career, she was director of consumer insights and emerging media at ChiatDay and co-founded Cyberdialogue—the world’s first online market research company—in 1992.
Marian sits on the board of directors of the Bob Woodruff Family Foundation (remind.org), which works to assist soldiers with brain injuries, and is an adviser to the Berlin School of Creative Leadership’s M.B.A. program. She frequently appears in print and broadcast media. Her blog, pnintelligentdialogue.com, launched in fall 2008.
Marian is author or coauthor of 15 books on topics ranging from current affairs to the youth market to the commercial workplace. Biography/Curriculum Vitae
Jeswald W. Salacuse is Henry J. Braker Professor of Law at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, the senior graduate professional school of international relations in the United States. Salacuse served as The Fletcher School's Dean for nine years.
With broad experience in higher education, international development, and legal practice, he specializes in international investment law, international negotiation, international business transactions, and law and development. Professor Salacuse holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School, an A.B. from Hamilton College, and a diploma from the University of Paris. He has been a lecturer in law at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria, a lawyer with a Wall Street law firm, a professor of law and director of research at the National School of Administration in the Congo, the Ford Foundation's Middle East advisor on law and development based in Beirut, Lebanon, and later the Foundation's representative in the Sudan.
For six years, he served as Dean of the School of Law of Southern Methodist University. Professor Salacuse has traveled and lectured widely. He has been a Visiting Professor at the University of London, the University of Bristol, the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, Paris, and the Instituto de Empresa, Madrid. In the spring of 2000, he held the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Comparative Law in Italy.

Salacuse has served as the Chairman of the Institute of Transnational Arbitration, Chairman of the Board of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, President of the International Third World Legal Studies Association, and the founding President of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA).
A consultant to multinational companies, government agencies, international organizations, universities, foundations and foreign governments, he is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Law Institute, and the executive committee and faculty of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School.
He is the lead independent director of several mutual funds managed by Legg Mason, chairman of the India Fund and Asia Tigers Fund, and president of an international arbitration tribunal under the auspices of the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes.

Anita’s entrepreneurial spirit and firm belief in networking brought about the establishment of Royal Roots Global Inc. in 1994. Royal Roots is headquartered in Chicago with a liaison office in Washington D.C., and associates in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Focusing on the U.S.-China business space, Royal Roots specializes in formulating and implementing strategies, building and managing networks, and conducting business negotiations. It handled projects in China, England, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States. The firm also contributes pro bono services to selected educational institutions in both the United States and China.
Anita began to engage in investment activities in early 1980. Since the middle of 1999, she has undertaken various United States-China business projects. Her experience in finance and marketing forms the backbone of Royal Roots’ specialties; and an array of services is offered to help facilitate US-China business activities.
Before establishing Royal Roots Global Inc., Anita started a trading and investment firm in Singapore. She has eight years experience working with four major European banks in Hong Kong, where she was sent for training in Singapore, Japan and France. Anita is a frequent speaker in Illinois’s business and academic communities. She is also regularly interviewed by the press to share her experience in the U.S.-China space, among which are WTTW Channel 11, BusinessPOV, Financial Times, Crain’s Chicago Business, Business 2.0, China Fortune, World News Journal and Xinhua News Agency. She was featured in the October 2008 cover article of the Chinese and Foreign Entrepreneurs magazine, the oldest magazine in China devoted to the entrepreneurial space.
Anita graduated Summa cum Laude from Loyola University Chicago with a BBA in economics. She also earned an MBA from Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.

Andy Cagnetta is the CEO of Transworld Business Brokers. Transworld is the number one business brokerage in the State of Florida. They have currently over 90 business brokers in the organizations and have over 1,500 businesses for sale. He first engaged with them in 1995 while looking to buy a company. He was offered a position at Transworld as an agent, became one of the company’s top performers, and eventually bought the company. Andy is the Current Chairman of the International Business Brokers Association (IBBA) headquartered in Chicago IL. This is an international industry association that educates its members and oversees the industry’s governmental interactions. Andy graduated from Lehigh University with a BS Business and Economics.

David Fein is an entrepreneur, world traveler and adventurer. At 16, he was the second-youngest person ever to set foot on the South Pole. To put himself through college, David started and managed a sailboat charter business, taking on the roles of both CEO and skipper. At the age of 25, and fulfilling a long time dream, he sailed across the Pacific to Tahiti on a 34-foot sailboat. In 1986, after returning from Tahiti, he co-founded ValuSource and became ValuSource’s president. Shortly after starting ValuSource, and together with his wife Michelle, he co-founded Kids Express, an alternative K-9 school which focused on academic excellence, self-awareness, interpersonal communication and personal responsibility.
For over twenty years ValuSource has been the leading provider of business valuation software. Under David’s direction, ValuSource became known for software excellence and solid sales growth. In 1994 David sold ValuSource to the billion dollar international publishing company John Wiley & Sons (JWS).
In 1997 David formed a partnership with the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) to develop the MGMA’s interactive survey products, and now ValuSource is the leading provider of medical practice benchmarking software.
In 2004 it became clear that ValuSource needed its independence back to continue to prosper and expand so he bought the company back. Once again privately held, ValuSource was in a position to leverage its technology, partnerships, and expertise. In order to enhance both revenue and profit growth and more fully meet the needs of the valuation market, David spearheaded the acquisition of both KeyValueData in 2006 and the Institute of Business Appraisers in 2008. David’s mission is to cultivate both personal and professional excellence through the art of business.
David has a bachelor’s degree in computer science and an MBA.

Richard Trottier is President of Sundial Partners, Inc. He has over twenty years of experience in advising clients in acquisition, divestiture, mergers, business valuation, strategic planning and turn around planning. He has initiated and closed over 200 transactions in a wide variety of industries. Richard has served as an expert witness in business valuation and fee dispute questions. Richard has owned several businesses, held public office and served on the board of a number of private companies and civic organizations, including the board of directors of the International Association of Mergers and Acquisition Professionals. He has spoken frequently at national industry conventions and published articles of interest to business owners and their advisors.
He is the author of “Winning the Middle Market: How Private Companies Succeed in Today’s Market,” published by John Wiley & Sons 2009. Richard holds a BS and MA from Wayne State University and has completed the course work for a Ph.D.

Mel is a Certified Public Accountant with over two decades of experience as a financial expert, valuation expert and business and success strategist. Mel is a Success Strategy Coach and Master Practitioner in Neuro-Linguistic Strategies. Mel is regularly sought after for consulting and valuation engagements around the country such as family limited partnerships, co-tenant interest valuations, operating businesses as well as various entities. These projects have ranged from small family owned businesses to large $1.7 billion companies.
He has also represented the Internal Revenue Service as their valuation expert in numerous cases and was jointly retained by taxpayer and Internal Revenue Service under the authorization of the U.S. Tax Court to provide a valuation of numerous entities that was be binding on all parties.
Mel is a member of the esteemed National Speakers Association and the recipient of the Certified Speaking Professional designation (less than 10% the speakers who belong to the International Federation for Professional Speakers hold this professional designation and only two other CPAs hold the designation).
A recognized forensic expert witness in business financial issues, he is also a nationally recognized and award-winning speaker addressing professional conferences on a local, state & national level. He provides strategies in risk management, threat management and self protection to clients across the country.
Mel is one of the primary instructors of the NACVA's National Training Team as well as an Adjunct Professor at the University of San Diego Law School.
Mel has been a guest lecturer for Tax Court Judge the Honorable David Laro, at his LLM program at the University of San Diego Law School on valuation issues. Mel has being a featured presenter at numerous State Tax Institutes around the country, Internal Revenue Service Continuing Education Conferences and at the NACVA National Annual Valuation Conferences as well as at the AICPA Annual Business Valuation Conference in 2001 through 2005.
Further, Mel is the recipient of NACVA's 1998 Circle of Light Award (NACVA’s highest instructor distinction), Instructor of Exceptional Distinction (ten consecutive years – 1997 through 2008), 1997 Instructor of the Year Award as well as the 1996 Outstanding Member Award.
Mel was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2005 by the AICPA and was voted one of the Top 25 CPAs by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal. Mel was the Chairman of the 2003 and 2005 AICPA Valuation Conference.
He (a two-time inductee into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame) is the Founder and President of The SAVE Foundation, a non profit charitable organization that provides programs and funding to assist those that have been or may be victims of abuse and violence as well as raise the public awareness to the problem and educate them in prevention.
